1. Clothing & Collar Preparation
For the cleanest look under academic gowns, wear a collared shirt with a tie or a V-neck/scoop-neck top. The gown sits open at the neck, making collared attire frame your portrait neatly.
2. Hair Styling & Mortarboards
Graduation caps (mortarboards) sit flat on the head. Style your hair in a way that allows the cap to rest comfortably, or bring bobby pins to secure the cap cleanly in place.
3. Personalizing Your Session

How much do graduation photos cost in Halifax?

Do I need to bring my own gown and hood?
No. Gown, hood and mortarboard are included with your session. We have authentic regalia for Dalhousie, Saint Mary’s (SMU), Mount Saint Vincent (MSVU), University of King’s College, St. FX, NSCC and HRM high schools. See our Available Hoods & Gowns page or call (902) 830-3232. If your hood isn’t on the list, call us and we’ll try to source it.
How long does a typical grad portrait session take?
Most sessions take 30 to 45 minutes, which gives us time to photograph several poses with and without your cap, gown, hood and family members.
When will I get my graduation photos?
You preview and choose your favourites on our big screen the same day. Prints usually take 5 to 7 business days.
How early should I book my graduation photos?
Book as soon as you know your convocation date. Spring is our busiest season, so booking earlier gives you more session times to choose from.
What should I wear underneath the gown?
A crisp white collared shirt, blouse or dress with a dark tie works best, because the V-neck of the gown shows collared shirts clearly. Joe guides you through every pose, so no modeling experience is needed.
Can I bring my pet or dog to the session?
Yes. The studio is pet-friendly and we love including dogs and family pets in graduation sessions. A quick brush and a walk beforehand helps your dog stay relaxed.
Do you offer digital files with graduation photos?
Yes. Our digital graduation collections start at $145 for 1 high-resolution digital file, $280 for 3 files and $395 for 5 files. You can also add digital files to any print package for $95 each (one digital file is one photo). If you order à la carte instead of a package, a digital file is $125 each, plus the session fee.
Can I add an extra pose or more prints?
Yes. You can add an extra pose to any package by purchasing the prints or the digital file for that pose separately. You can also add more prints, digital files or photo books to any package.
